2013 Saturday Discovery Program for High School Students

The VSU Computing Academy is inviting all high school men and women to participate in a workshop to learn about Computer Science (CS) through some fun activities. The workshop will be conducted on Saturday, November 9th, 2013 from 9:00 am until 2:00 pm.

At the completion of the workshop, the participants will understand the following concepts:

  1. Binary Numbers (Count the Dots): The binary number system plays a central role in how information of all kinds is stored on computers. Understanding binary can lift a lot of the mystery from computers.
  2. Error Detection (Card Flip Magic): The world is a noisy place, and errors can occur whenever information is stored or transmitted. Error detection techniques add extra parity bits to data to determine when errors have occurred.
  3. Minimal Spanning Tree (Muddy City): Networks are everywhere in modern society: roads, wires, water and gas pipes all connect one place to another. People who build networks often need to work out the most efficient way to make connections, which can be a difficult problem.
  4. Routing and Deadlock (The Orange Game): Computer networks are based on passing messages from computer to computer. This sounds simple in principle, but in practice all sorts of contention and bottlenecks can occur.

Consent form: Please make sure to bring the completed consent form with you.

Flier: Print out and share this flier with your students or friends!

Food & Giveaways: Snacks and lunch will be provided. Participants will also receive a Computer Science customized t-shirt and a USB flash drive containing information distributed during the workshop.

Arrival and Departure: The program will start at 9:00am and will end promptly at 3:00pm on Saturday, November 9th, 2013. Please do not arrive before 8:45am. Students must be checked in and picked up by a parent/guardian unless the high school student is driving to VSU on his/her own. There will be no one at VSU to supervise the students after 3:15 so they must be picked up by then.
